Procrastinate

delay or postpone action; put off doing something.

"the temptation will be to procrastinate until the power struggle plays itself out"

The constant battle when setting something up by yourself. I think it comes when I have a long list of things to do which are all important but none are essential. I take the approach of allowing myself a little time to do things like wipe my computer, or do some accounts, embracing my procrastination, and then trying to start at the top of the list and work down. Which I need to start doing now and stop writing this blog!

Perseverance

continued steady belief or efforts

Perseverance will pay off in the end.

So I am quickly learning that you need a lot of perseverance to set up and run a charity. Firstly it is important to acknowledge that I have not felt as inspired and excited about something as much as I do about this since I left college and set up my production company. But it is a bit of an emotional rollercoaster in these early days, going from one inspiring meeting or discussion to a hard hitting, down to earth grounding call a few hours later. Both are of course needed, and will help to form this charity into something really amazing, but when you are setting up alone, it doesn’t half mess with your emotions. I would say on the whole the charity is doing well so far, we have some initial funding from some amazing people who have taken a leap to support not only the charity but me at this start up stage, plus I have started to form a board of trustees who will help shape the charity with me and provide in valuable support and advice. But there is still a long way to go and lots to do, and at the top of my list is to find an educator to partner with on this adventure. Someone who will be able to think out of the box and be inspirational with our learning programmes, and not be afraid to push the limits as far as aspirations and the search for the fun in every project we do. This is my aim for this week!

Calligraphy

the art of beautiful handwriting. The term may derive from the Greek words for “beauty” (kallos) and “to write” (graphein). It implies a sure knowledge of the correct form of letters—i.e., the conventional signs by which language can be communicated—and the skill to make them with such ordering of the various parts and harmony of proportions that the experienced, knowledgeable eye will recognize such composition as a work of art. Calligraphic work, as art, need not be legible in the usual sense of the word.

So I woke up this morning, and was thinking would it be interesting to have a Word of the week section for the Bank website. This then led on to how would I present my words of the week, first thought was different fonts, but this felt a bit too easy. As a kid I used to love calligraphy and playing with type, I would spend hours trying to perfect my ink work, and then progressed into cutting letters out of paper and using shadows. I have forgotten all of it, so I thought could it be an interesting thing to add to my word of the week idea, and in the process of doing it I re teach myself calligraphy. So here I am giving it a go. I think it will become a mix of exploring words, learning calligraphy and documenting the setting up of a charity. I hope I keep it up. So the first word is Calligraphy, and if you want to own this word head over to our DONATE section and you can help with the set up of our charity and receive a unique WORD BOND in the process. But please note, we only have one of each word, so act fast if you love Calligraphy.
