It’s a Wrap!
The final report from our short blog series on the inaugural summer holiday creative writing club…
Day 4: By now our 16 young writers were firm friends, and there was both a sense of celebration and tinge of sadness on our last day of the week-long club. But that didn't stop us from encouraging the young writers to give their best efforts in our Podcasting session!
We looked at the notion of identity and self, working through a series of tasks to explore what/who we care about. We also did our own take on Desert Island Discs; the children chose a song they liked and wrote a paragraph about how it made them feel. We then listened to these written pieces, each accompanied by the song that was its subject.
At the end of the writing tasks the children selected a piece to record on our professional podcasting kit.
They were also given their published storybooks from Day 1, to finish writing up their endings to Dave, the illustrated tale of the cyclops and his 100-handed friend.
The BODAN Holiday Creative Writing Club was a huge success, with volunteer writing mentors giving up their time for these all-day workshops; we are enormously grateful to them for making this vital difference with the small-group mentoring their presence allows. We’d also like to thank Lucy Brazier and Claire Wilding for their food and garden expertise respectively, and the additional time they spent devising their workshops in advance. And big thanks as always to Hugh Dunford-Wood for his inspiring live illustrations.
Finally, a massive thank you to the young writers who showed up and then some, and gave us such a fantastic week of fun and creative writing. See you next year!
