It’s a Marshmallow (and spaghetti) World

We had a wonderful time during our last two Food Glorious Food! workshops at Salway Ash school; pupils ages 7-11 worked incredibly hard to bring together their own food stories to complement the recipes they’d brought in.

The creative process was intense, with detailed mind-maps; adding elements of story to transform work into narrative non-fiction; structuring the prose; and writing it all up.

Even the Grumpy Bank Manager couldn’t fail to be impressed with the words, though there was some confusion on his part between noodles and poodles when speaking to one pupil.

After all the children’s travails it was only right and proper that we finished up the workshop series with a team-building exercise of spaghetti and marshmallow towers - a fiercely fun and competitive activity that brought out the engineers in our young writers. Frankly though, the real challenge was not eating the marshmallows before construction took place!

Years 3-6 should be super proud of their efforts; the upcoming anthology of their stories, recipes, odes to food, and glossary of tastes will be something to savour.

Enormous thanks to our volunteer writing mentors who worked with the same small group of children each week, nurturing their memories and stories. Again, the unique mentoring BODAN offers is only possible due to their generosity in giving their time.
