Featured Volunteer Illustrator.

Who is Emily Stewart?

I am a 19-year-old BA(Hons) Illustration student who is currently studying in Falmouth, Cornwall. I love drawing, watching movies, crafting and adventuring somewhere new. I was born in Weymouth, where I discovered my love for sea swimming and shell and sea glass collecting. My family has always inspired me and encouraged me to do what I love!

What made you start illustrating?

I have always been intrigued and amazed by illustrations. Illustration isn't just one subject; it can be anything from posters to adverts to learning guides and storybooks. I believe illustration is so fantastic because you can translate so much meaning and emotion just through one image. I believe it helps kids experience unique and imaginative stories they may not have come across in real life. I have found that illustration has helped me with my imagination and allowed me to discover life teachings and advice that I can include in my own work.

What do you like about volunteering with the Bank of Dreams & Nightmares?

I enjoy volunteering with the Bank of Dreams & Nightmares because I love observing the story's construction, where the children decide on different aspects with the volunteers. It allows me to create a real sense of narrative and context in my illustrations. I also really like the challenge of composing illustrations so the children can see the story they have created come to life. It is such a great experience which I would definitely recommend!

What advice could you give a budding young illustrator?

I believe you must be passionate and excited about your work. Sometimes you don't feel as confident and creative, but once you get the balance of what you enjoy doing, it will just come to you! I have found doing a range of experiences, such as the Bank of Dreams & Nightmares, has opened my eyes to what my career could look like in the future, which is very useful.

If you could be any animal in the world, what would you be and why?

I believe I would be a little robin bird if I were an animal. I feel there is a sense of magic about them. You can see them from time to time, in your garden or on the streets. They are little people watchers who watch the world go by. I love observing people's everyday lives and creating little stories and illustrations.
