Building the Arc

We’re getting down to the business end of our six-week writing project with Sir John Colfox School; with two more sessions to go, the participating Year 9 students have each built a high-quality portfolio of writing to go into the anthology. Their finale pieces are ‘longer’ short stories to complement the variety of flash fiction, short scenes, and Kennings written thus far, all of which is woven together by the eerie theme that underpins the collection.

The young writers are crafting short stories over three sessions, paying close attention to the narrative arc to create three-dimensional characters, settings, and plot. An ‘elevator pitch’ synopsis task was designed to consolidate that planning, and give the pupils confidence in their stories.
